The settings on newer smartphones or tablets seem to become more and more complicated with every version. For some users, going into the settings on any device can seem like a daunting experience. Swiping from the edge of the screen, new buttons, and software updates can all make for a complicated experience.
The settings are located in an application that is used to customize your device to work the way you prefer. For most Android devices, the settings app is typically found on the home screen and it looks like a gear or cog. Once you’re in the settings, you can change your font size, wallpaper, and notifications. You can also uninstall apps, update the device, and use several other options.
Changing the font size on your Android device
If the font on your smartphone or tablet is too big or too small, open your settings app and scroll down until you see Display and tap it. Look for the Font Size or Vision setting to change your font size and style.
From the display screen you can also customize your wallpaper and screen saver by tapping on Wallpapers. Depending on your Android device, you can choose from images already on your smartphone or download new ones to set as the background. You can also download themes that change the way your entire display looks, from app shortcuts to font size to menu options.
Customizing the notifications
Notifications can include text messages, email alerts, app updates, Amber alerts, and weather notifications. These notifications can show up on your lock screen like text messages or appear as small icons at the top of your smartphone. If you think you’re getting too many of these notifications or find yourself clearing them out too often, try filtering them in settings.
To do this, tap on Notifications in your settings. From here, you will see a list of all of your apps. You can choose whether to continue getting notifications from each app individually or turn them off. You can also choose whether you hear a sound or not when the app sends you a notice by clicking on the app in the list.
Disabling or uninstalling apps
One thing some users may not know is that removing an app from your home screen does not uninstall it from your device. Un-installation must be done within the settings.
To fully uninstall an app and all of its data, go into your settings and tap on Apps. Once inside, you will see a list of apps currently installed on your smartphone. Tap on the app that you want to get rid of and you will see an option to uninstall it at the top. This will uninstall the app from your smartphone or tablet. Some default apps that come installed onto your device may not let you uninstall, but they can be disabled.
Updating your Android device
It is important to keep your devices updated with the latest operating system (OS). Updating your devices will help keep them secure against malware or viruses, as well as keep apps running smoothly.
Depending on your device, the process for updating software can vary. In your settings, there should be an option called About smartphone or About tablet towards the bottom. Here you will see the information about your device such as the software version, model number, serial number, and SIM card status. You should also see System update or Software update. Tapping one of these options will prompt you to check for updates. If you are not already up-to-date, this will install the latest OS version to your device.
